I can’t adequately describe how grateful our family is for the wonderful care given to our mother Hilda, who was a resident at your facility for many years. Foley is extremely fortunate to have a facility of this caliber, staffed with compassionate, professional caregivers. We only have praise for the care she was given. Any problems that arose were addressed immediately to our satisfaction. Mother was always treated with gentle care and respect by everyone.
She thought the kitchen staff were there just for her, and the dining room was referred to as her “favorite restaurant.” Always amazed at how clean and neat it always was. Her greatest joy was sitting by her window to the world and reading. To her delight, there were always books to read. Some of the aides and nurses became like extended family and she often called them “part of our circle of love.”
As her dementia increased, her personality began to change. It was as if some grumpy little old lady snuck in when we weren’t looking and took her place for the day. The next visit would find mother had returned. When one of the nurses suggested that Unit #1 might be a better place for her, it broke my heart to think she was so bad that she needed to be in a closed ward. But I trusted her judgment, because I knew she really cared about mother, and we went to check it out. When there was a room with a window that made it all possible. Without her window, she would never survive, even if her mind was not always there. I will be forever grateful for her suggestion. After only a couple of days in the quieter atmosphere, less noise and activity, she became the mother of old. Oh, her mind still whisked back and forth between her childhood and the present, but the anxiety and stress level went way down. Her manner of speech, her actions, and her smile returned. She was more like she used to be.
All of the staff are exceptional people, but those in Unit #1 are angels in disguise. Mother was treated as if she was their own, and she was content. We will forever be grateful for everyone who touched our lives, and gave her the same love and care they would give their own mother 24/7. Grateful too for all the times I came of called, and was always greeted with a cheerful voice and smile, and an eagerness to help in any way. Foley is so blessed to have so many wonderful people sharing their special talents, in this difficult and often heart breaking healthcare field. I just wanted to make sure everyone knows how much they are appreciated.
Sincerely,
Thelma
